Alhamdulillah — you're going for Umrah. Between booking flights and reading up on the rites, packing is the part everyone leaves for the last 48 hours, and it's also the part that most affects your comfort in the Haram. This is the packing list we wish someone had handed us: what you'll actually use, what to skip, and the one rule people forget until they're standing in the airport.

First, the rule that shapes your whole bag

Once you enter the state of ihram, scented products are off-limits — that includes perfumed soap, deodorant, wipes, and lotion. So the single most useful thing in your toiletry bag is a set of fragrance-free everything. Pack it in a separate pouch so you're not squinting at ingredient labels in a hotel bathroom at 2 a.m.

The ihram (for men)

Two white, unstitched cloths — that's the uniform of every pilgrim since the beginning. Get a proper towel-weight set (thin ones turn see-through when you sweat, and you will sweat) and an ihram belt with a zip pocket for your phone and cash during tawaf. If this is your first Umrah, an all-in-one kit saves you five separate purchases.

Pack two sets if you can — after a long tawaf in the heat, a fresh ihram feels like a mercy.

For women

There's no special garment for women's ihram — your regular loose, modest clothing is the sunnah. Pack breathable abayas or long dresses in light fabrics (you'll live in them), comfortable hijabs that stay put without pins digging in, and a prayer set that packs small.

Prayer and worship on the go

The Haram's marble is famously cool, but you won't always pray inside it — hotel lobbies, airport gates, and the plaza outside all happen. A pocket prayer mat earns its place a dozen times over, and a digital tasbih counter keeps your dhikr count through the jet lag.

And tuck a pocket dua book in your bag — Fortress of the Muslim (Hisnul Muslim) is the one you'll see in every pilgrim's hands. Save our free Protection Against Harm dua printable to your phone for the journey, too.

Feet first: footwear and comfort

You will walk more than you think — tawaf, sa'i between Safa and Marwa, and everything in between adds up to miles a day. Broken-in slides or sandals (easy off at every entrance), a drawstring shoe bag so your footwear stays with you inside, and blister care in your day bag. Your future self makes dua for you here.

Staying organized in the crowd

A slim crossbody or waist pouch that sits under your outer layer holds passport copies, cash, phone, and hotel card — everything you need during long hours away from the room. Add a reusable water bottle (Zamzam refill stations are everywhere) and a small umbrella for the midday sun.

What to skip

Leave the bulky travel iron, the "just in case" third pair of shoes, and anything scented. Hotels in Makkah and Madinah are surrounded by shops selling whatever you forgot, usually for less than you'd pay at home — pack light going, leave room for dates and gifts coming back.

One last thing

The best thing you can pack costs nothing: a written list of people to make dua for. Standing in front of the Kaaba, minds famously go blank — the pilgrims who wrote their list never regret it. May Allah accept your Umrah and grant you a safe journey. Ameen.
